The Recreation and Sport Management undergraduate curriculum offers professional preparation programs designed to prepare students for employment in park, recreation, sport or recreational therapy delivery systems. The program is oriented toward direct services, supervisory, and management employment opportunities. A student may elect to gain competencies in the following subplan areas: Parks Management , Recreation and Sport Management , and Recreational Therapy.

Recreational Therapy, also known as Therapeutic Recreation, is a health profession that uses recreation and leisure based interventions to improve the physical, social, cognitive, and emotional functioning of individuals with disabilities. It is a profession where you can enhance independent living skills and overall quality of life of people through leisure and recreation based treatment and activities.

The Florida International University Recreational Therapy Program provides a nationally recognized curriculum designed "To prepare competent entry-level recreational therapists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains." Students are prepared to work in a variety of human service settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing facilities, veterans’ services, community parks, recreation centers, mental health facilities, correctional facilities and private practice, among others. Students learn from faculty members who are all nationally certified and recreational therapists with many years of experience.

The BS/MS Combined Degree in Recreation and Sport Management: Recreational Therapy Track (RT 4+1) prepares students to be eligible for certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTSR) and work as a recreational therapist after the bachelor’s degree and also be able to complete a master’s degree online in one year after the BS. Having a master’s degree in the field will allow students to be more competitive for RT jobs and likely offer more potential for upward mobility at an agency to become an administrator or manager in the future.

The Religious Studies major serves as a basis for students who wish to pursue the study of religion or theology as a career, for students preparing for a career in counseling, education, business, politics, law or medicine, or for students who wish to undertake a dual major in a related field. The major is designed to allow students to focus either on comparative topics, using a critical approach to understanding religious phenomena and their relation to society in a broad cultural context, or on the theory and practice of a specific religious tradition in its historical setting.

Students learn the foundation social work skills and theories that assist clients in their daily lives. The Program emphasizes the ability to work with diverse clients in a variety of settings and examines how individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities impact one another. Students develop critical thinking skills and become familiar with research-based practice as well as social justice issues. Students may complete the BSSW on a full-time or part-time basis. The BSSW Program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

The BA in Sociology/Anthropology allows students to concentrate in either sociology or anthropology. The sociology track educates students in the scientific study of social life. Sociologists confront real world problems such as the effects on social life resulting from corporate downsizing, the growth of web-based and mobile technologies, or urban blight and gentrification. The anthropology track educates students in the study of the cultural practices in particular places; how people organize, govern, and create meaning. Anthropologists work on problems such as the cross-cultural delivery of health care, exclusion or assimilation of immigrant populations. Students acquire a global perspective and valuable skills including social survey techniques, ethnography, social statistical sampling methods, computerized social data analysis, and computer-based mapping of social phenomena.

The program educates students in language, literature, linguistics and Latin American and Spanish cultures. The department offers a very successful Summer program in Spain, which attracts students from all disciplines. Spanish majors are fully prepared to enter graduate programs in Spanish Literature and Linguistics as well as teach at the high school level. Likewise a second major or minor in Spanish leads to many opportunities in commerce, hospitality and business in Florida and abroad and is ideal for students in International Relations or Government.
